Now more than ever, collaboration matters. With uncertainties surrounding federal funding, uncertainty from the U.S. Department of Education, and the growing complexity of ensuring equitable access for every student, our shared responsibility has never been clearer.
The last few days I was in New York City alongside my entire Board of Education, including our student ex officio member, Alani, attending the New York State School Boards Association (NYSSBA) Annual Convention and Education Expo.
This convention was more than a professional development event. It was a statement of unity and a reminder that leadership in education is not about personal agendas. It is about doing what is best for kids.
And let me be clear--the fact that we like each other, doesn't hurt. We made it a point to spend time together learning and growing. Attending NYSSBA's Annual Convention and Education Expo was a prime example of this. We also spent some downtime exploring NY--we went to dinner and visited St. Patrick's Cathedral and just enjoyed each other's company.
This year was particularly meaningful. Our student member, Alani’s presence, represented the voice that matters most—the student perspective. It is a powerful symbol of what authentic governance looks like when we invite young people to the table and equip them to shape the future we are building together.
The work ahead is not easy, but moments like this remind me why we lead—not for ourselves, but for those who will one day lead after us.
